Cocoa Beach Itineraries: One Day, a Long Weekend and a Week

Updated October 20264.9from 86 Google reviews(619) 530-0276

The question we get most from visitors is not what to do but in what order. Cocoa Beach rewards an early start and a loose afternoon: the water is cleanest and the beach emptiest first thing, and the storms, when they come, come after lunch.

These are three plans — one day, a long weekend and a week — with the surf lesson placed where it does the most for the trip rather than where it is convenient for us. Everything is either walkable or a short drive, and none of it depends on a launch, because launch dates move.

One day is enough for a lesson and the pier

Surf at 9:00 AM, lunch on A1A, walk the pier and browse Ron Jon, then sunset on the sand.

Give Kennedy Space Center its own day

About 35 to 45 minutes north and worth the best part of a day. Playalinda and Merritt Island deserve half a day each.

Book the lesson before the flight

9:00 AM slots and holiday weeks fill first. Requesting a time costs nothing, so there is no reason to wait.

Mornings beat the crowd

Light wind and clean water before midday, and the car parks are still half empty. That is why we teach at 9:00 AM.

One day

Start with a 9:00 AM lesson. You are parked while the beach is still empty, in the water within minutes of arriving, and finished by late morning with the best part of the day still ahead of you.

Lunch on A1A near the pier, then walk the pier itself, spend a couple of hours on the sand and browse Ron Jon's. Finish with sunset — on the beach looking north, or at one of the lagoon-side bars across the causeway.

If you only get one day here, this is the highest-value version of it. The one day in Cocoa Beach guide adds the detail on hours and parking.

A long weekend

Day one: beach and a lesson in the morning, the pier and downtown in the afternoon, dinner on A1A. Day two: Kennedy Space Center, which is a full day and worth the drive north. Day three: Playalinda and Canaveral National Seashore in the morning, Historic Cocoa Village for lunch and a wander, sunset back on the sand.

That leaves one spare morning for a second lesson — usually where first-timers stop falling in and start riding — or an easy beach morning if you would rather not.

A week

A week lets the trip slow down. Surf twice, three days apart, so everything recovers in between. Paddle the lagoon: a daytime kayak tour for manatees and dolphins, or a summer night paddle to see the bioluminescence. Take a morning for Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and an afternoon for an airboat tour on the St. Johns, about 50 minutes away.

Use the rest of the week the way locals do: mornings on the beach, a day out to Melbourne for Brevard Zoo, and an evening or two across the causeway in Cocoa Village. Leave one day empty for whatever the weather suggests.

A cruise shore day

If your trip is a cruise itinerary rather than a holiday, everything compresses into a port window. The terminals are about ten minutes north, and a one- or two-hour lesson, a walk on the pier and a look around downtown all fit between docking and departure.

Tell us your docking and departure times when you book and we confirm a slot with room either side of it. The cruise ship guide has the full timing.

What to move when the weather does

Florida plans change in the afternoon and rarely in the morning, which is why every plan here starts early. If a day turns wet, swap in Kennedy Space Center, the museums or Cocoa Village and keep the beach for the following morning.

Weather can move a lesson too. If the wind or swell is wrong for your slot we message you with another time or day before you leave the hotel, and moving a session costs nothing.

What to book before you fly

Three things are worth booking ahead. The surf lesson first, because 9:00 AM slots and holiday weeks fill earliest and requesting a time costs nothing. Kennedy Space Center tickets next, for a specific day. Then check the launch schedule, because a launch is free to watch and often the best hour of the trip — but the date moves at short notice, so treat one as a bonus rather than the plan.

Everything else here — the pier, the beach, the wildlife refuge, the causeway — needs no booking at all.
