Cocoa Beach FAQ: The Questions Visitors Ask Us Most

Updated October 20264.9from 86 Google reviews(619) 530-0276

These are the questions we answer on the beach most days, grouped so you can find yours quickly: getting here and around, the beaches and the weather, lessons and booking, families and groups, and the space coast next door.

Where a question needs more than a paragraph, the answer links to the full guide — this page is the short version, written by the instructors who work this beach every morning.

45 minutes from MCO

Cocoa Beach is the closest beach town to Orlando International Airport, on SR 528 east, and ten minutes south of the cruise terminals.

Lessons run every day

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, holidays included, with the board, rash guard and wetsuit supplied. Nothing is charged to request a time.

Free parking exists

The county oceanfront parks at the north end have free lots, restrooms and showers. City parking near the pier is metered.

No cars on this sand

Unlike Daytona and New Smyrna to the north, vehicles are not allowed on Cocoa Beach. You park and walk.

Getting here and getting around

Cocoa Beach is a barrier island with one main road, A1A. Orlando International Airport is about 45 minutes west on the Beachline (SR 528, a toll road), the Port Canaveral cruise terminals are ten minutes north, and Melbourne is about 40 minutes south.

Downtown and the pier end of the island are genuinely walkable, ride-share covers everything else at short notice, and buses and trolleys along A1A come and go with the season. You do not need a car to surf with us — but you do need one for Kennedy Space Center, Playalinda or the airboat tours.

Beaches, parking and weather

The beach is free and there is always room somewhere on it. Free county lots sit at the north end parks, with restrooms and outdoor showers; parking closer to the pier is metered and paid by app. No vehicles are allowed on the sand here, unlike Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach further north.

Water temperature swings from the mid sixties in winter to the mid eighties in late summer, and every lesson includes a wetsuit. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms, which is why lessons run in the morning, and hurricane season runs from June to November with the peak in mid September.

Surf lessons and booking

Private one-on-one lessons are $99 for an hour and $169 for two. Kids lessons run from age 6, family and group lessons start at three surfers, and corporate group sessions are quoted by group size. Everything is included: board, rash guard, wetsuit and a safety briefing in waist-deep water.

Requesting a time costs nothing and we confirm your slot before anything is charged. If the wind or swell is wrong for the window we message you with an alternative before you leave the hotel, and lessons run every day including public holidays.

Families, kids and groups

Kids from 6 to 18 surf on soft-top boards sized to them in waist-deep water, with the instructor beside the board and parents free to watch from the sand or join in. A family of four can be split across two instructors so everyone gets water time.

Groups of three or more pay $99 per person for an hour, and larger bookings get multiple instructors and a lead instructor running the beach briefing. Bachelorette weekends, birthdays and company teams are all regular bookings here.

Launches, Kennedy Space Center and Playalinda

Rocket launches from Cape Canaveral are free to watch from the beach, Jetty Park and the causeway, and they are the best-value hour on the Space Coast — though schedules move at short notice.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is about 35 to 45 minutes north and worth a full day. Playalinda, inside Canaveral National Seashore, is the emptiest sand near town with seasonal hours and an entry fee, and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is where the manatees and wading birds are.

Ready to try it yourself?

Private, kids and group lessons run every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Board, rash guard and wetsuit included.
